NT man charged after driving through pedestrian mall at Wollongong, NSW

A Northern Territory man has been charged after reportedly taking a wrong turn and driving his hire car through Wollongong’s pedestrian mall yesterday.

Officers from Wollongong Police District have been told the Nissan X-Trail, with four people on board, was driven through the mall about 3:20pm (Sunday 26 January 2020).

While no one was injured, police had grave concerns about the incident as 15 to 20 pedestrians were wakling in the mall at the time.

Following extensive inquiries, officers arrested the driver at a business on Cliff Road, North Wollongong, about 9.25pm.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, negligent driving, and other traffic offences.

The 44-year-old man, from Araluen in the NT, has been granted strict conditional bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 25 February 2020.
