Protection must be guaranteed for any Tasmanian nurses who are deployed to support Victoria’s COVID-19 response, and public health in Tasmania must also be prioritised.
Shadow Minister for Health Sarah Lovell said Tasmanians would commend efforts to support Victoria, but the interests of the state must be protected.
“Tasmanian nurses who have the expertise to help in Victoria, and are in a position to travel to that state, will want to do what they can as part of the national effort to manage the pandemic.
“The Tasmanian government must receive assurances from the Victorian Premier that those nurses will be provided with adequate PPE, equipment and local training, so that they can deliver support safely.
“The Tasmanian government must also ensure there are watertight protocols in place for the return of those nurses to Tasmania.
“The last thing we want is for a gesture of goodwill to be the thing that imports COVID-19 to Tasmania.”
