Plans are well underway for Soul Street New Year’s Eve (NYE) celebrations in Byron Bay this year.

Once again the free entertainment will be targeted at families with two event areas being activated this year.

From 4pm there will be children’s activities, creative workshops and outdoor dining in Jonson Street.

The main stage will be at Dening Park near the Byron Bay Surf Club with music to start at 6pm.

Dening Park will be a low waste zone with people asked to BYO plates, cups and cutlery to reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill.

A wash station will be set up by Mullum Cares so people can borrow cups, use them and return them and they will be washed for the next person.

Vanessa Adams, Director Corporate and Community Services, said this year the NYE event has been refreshed.

“In previous years Soul Street has been held in Jonson Street, but we are trying something new and moving the main stage to the beachfront,” Ms Adams said.

“We are working closely with police and the contractors organising the event to make sure it is family-friendly and there will be absolutely no tolerance for anti-social behaviour,” Ms Adams said.

Byron Bay’s CBD, parks and beachfront areas will be alcohol-free zones and there will be a heavy police presence in the town.

People coming to Byron Bay should have accommodation booked because Council’s Enforcement team will be patrolling streets, issuing fines for parking and illegal camping.

Information about NYE, including Soul Street entertainment, parking and traffic changes, is on Council’s website.

Specific information about Soul Street is on the Soul Street website.
