Tasmanian Labor will rebuild and revitalise TAFE from the ground up.
Shadow
Minister for TAFE, University and Skills Michelle O’Byrne said Labor will make
TAFE free in areas of skill shortages, supporting 20,000 Tasmanians to get a
foot in the door to a good job.
“Labor has
a plan to rebuild TAFE from the ground up,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“Over four
years we will invest $22.5 million to grow the TAFE teaching workforce by
nearly 20 per-cent, along with investing a further $40 million to help provide
free training in areas of critical skills shortages.
“Our plan
will enhance regional delivery, ensuring Tasmanians in regional areas have
better access to training and qualifications.
“It
includes eighty scholarships for people from industry to become qualified TAFE
teachers as well as funding to support twenty current TAFE teachers each year
to spend time back in the industry to keep their skills up to date and
relevant.”
Ms O’Byrne
said Peter Gutwein and the Liberal Party have a clear agenda to privatise TAFE.
“For seven
years, the Liberals have undermined and underinvested in TAFE and now Peter
Gutwein is privatising it.
“Peter
Gutwein cannot be believed, his plan will privatise TAFE and force it to make a
profit, which will then drive up course fees.
“Tasmania
needs a clear plan to help get people into work and address skill shortages.
“Only Labor is working for Tasmanians to ensure meaningful access to skills and training.
“Only a majority Labor Government will stop the privatisation of TAFE.”
