Open Gates Reveal Reservist Capacity

What does reserve service really look like?

A group of employers recently found out firsthand during a unique immersion experience at Kapooka and RAAF Base Wagga, where they gained insight into the training, commitment and skills their reservist employees develop to support Australia’s Defence capability and to thrive in their civilian workplaces.

Run by the ADF Reserves and Employer Support team, the event began at Kapooka, the ‘Home of the Soldier’, and provided the perfect setting for employers to experience a taste of military life.

Stepping beyond the boardroom, participants toured the platoon lines and witnessed live-fire training with the EF88 Austeyr rifle, foundation field training and a ceremonial parade rehearsal.

For many of the employers, the highlight was jumping into action on the obstacle course led by the physical training instructors.

“I thought it would be easy, but the high cargo nets and trying to stand up on that … got the heart racing,” Amentum employer Lucas Martins said.

‘Reservists really do fit into any workplace.’

The action-packed day concluded with dinner at the Officers’ Mess, which created a unique opportunity for employers to connect with each other and share experiences of supporting reservists in the workplace.

“It’s been great to understand who the other businesses are. We’re not pinpointed to any certain industry,” Commonwealth Bank representative Courtney Oglesby said.

“Reservists really do fit into any workplace.”

The immersive experience also gave employers the chance to tour the ‘Home of the Aviator’, RAAF Base Wagga, and the Aviation Heritage Centre, where they learned about the rich aviation history from RAAF personnel.

For many, the event offered a new perspective on the people they employ.

“It’s fantastic having reservists because they bring so many skills, knowledge and abilities from their reserve activities into the workplace,” KCM Consulting representative Kent Murrells said.

More than simply a visit to a military training establishment, the Kapooka immersion experience strengthened connections between Defence and industry, recognised the vital support employers provide to reservists, and fostered a deeper appreciation of those who proudly serve both their communities and the nation.
