Operation Colossus checks nearly 10,000 drivers in Springvale

Southern Metro Region police checked nearly 10,000 drivers in a two-day traffic operation in Springvale over the weekend.

Booze buses and random breath-testing sites were set up and operating between 7pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights on Springvale Road, Princes Highway, Police Road and Centre Road.

The aim of the operation was to provide a highly visible police presence in an effect to reduce the number of fatal and serious-injury collisions in the region.

Southern Metro Region has had an additional 14 people die on their roads this year compared to last year.

The results of the operation were:

• preliminary breath tests -9085

• drink drivers – 23

• drug drivers – 6

• disqualified/unlicensed drivers – 11

• unregistered vehicles – 21

• impounds – 4

• unroadworthy vehicles – 9

• arrests – 2

On the second night of the operation, Saturday night, officers intercepted a car which had been travelling on the wrong side of the Princes Highway.

The driver, a 41-year-old Clayton South man, underwent a breath test which resulted in a reading of .175.

His car was impounded and he is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and drive unregistered vehicle.
