Get set to cheer on the Junior Players from Moss Vale Hockey Club who are taking their game to the next level with the help of grant funding through Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Community Assistance Scheme.
“We’re grateful to have previously received funding support from Council toward goaley gear and training aids and this Community Assistance Scheme grant will make it possible for our hard-working Junior Players to now compete at the next level,” says Catherine Froome, Treasurer of Moss Vale Hockey Club.
The funding comes as timely relief for local families already under pressure of rising living costs. “Thanks to the grant funding we receive, every player has equal opportunity to carry their performance through to the next level,” Catherine says.
“The funds are invested toward the cost of the new uniforms, fees, travel and accommodation required for our Junior Players to represent the Southern Highlands at the next level of competition.”
A family run club that welcomes players of all ages and abilities, Moss Vale Hockey Club is excited to have had two girls selected this year by the Hockey NSW Development Team. “One of those players is Lucy (pictured) who started with the Club as a minkey and ow plays both our junior and senior teams, as well as coaching another junior team,” Catherine says. “She’s so thankful to have been selected for the NSW Hockey Futures Academy, after attending the representative carnivals.”
This new program looks at the development of young players over a number of years with a goal towards Brisbane Olympics in 2032. Lucy appreciates all of the support from her club and the development she’s received to bring her to this point and these opportunities. “Taking Lucy to the next level, the Academy takes an holistic development strateg, looking at nutrition, time management, volunteerism and community engagement, in addition to field skills and it all starts with a three day hockey camp this October in Newcastle,” Catherine explains.
“We’re immensely proud to play a part in supporting young local players to progress to that level, in partnership with Moss Vale Hockey Club, through our Community Assistance Scheme,” says Corinne Buxton, Council’s Coordinator Community Development.
With more than 100 active members, Moss Vale Hockey Club is an important community connector. Hockey is one of the oldest sports in the Southern Highlands and has been played here since 1932.”We rely upon community grant schemes like this to be able to continue to nurture the growth of local players, year after year, which is what keeps the club growing and thriving,” Catherine says.
