Outpatient services for 21st century open at Modbury Hospital

Communities in the north-east of Adelaide now have access to a new, state-of-the-art outpatient building as part of the Marshall Liberal Government’s $98 million redevelopment of the Modbury Hospital.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade said the purpose-built outpatient facility would deliver pre-admission, medical, surgical, women’s and paediatric, and allied services in a modern environment to better support the health and wellbeing of South Australians.

“We are building what matters to South Australians by investing in our hospital system to deliver better patient care closer to home, ensuring that the community in the north eastern suburbs has better access to health services,” said Minister Wade.

“Designed over two levels, the new Outpatient Department (OPD) at Modbury Hospital will provide more streamlined access for people visiting the hospital for treatment or diagnosis without requiring overnight hospitalisation.

“Up to 24 different outpatient speciality services will be offered on level one, with the ground floor dedicated to a new women’s and paediatrics outpatient clinic.

“The clinicians and staff at Modbury Hospital deliver world-class care and this new build will ensure they have the world-class facilities to match.

“Outpatient reform is a critical priority for the Marshall Liberal Government and across the state we are working hard to bring down outpatient wait times. The Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) has decreased maximum wait time by more than 50 per cent in the past 12 months.

“By prioritising patients’ time and performing on-the-spot treatment, we will be able to deliver more services closer to home in the most appropriate, effective and efficient way.

“Following on from the re-establishment of the new four-bed High Dependency Unit at Modbury Hospital last month, we also look forward to the completion of the new surgical suite in the coming weeks as the next milestone of this redevelopment.

“Labor’s failed Transforming Health plan saw Modbury Hospital downgraded, but we are reversing that with a massive $98 million investment that is seeing services brought back and giving residents in the north-eastern suburbs access to the health care they deserve.”

The new outpatient facility at Modbury Hospital includes almost 50 different areas including consulting, treatment, procedure, and recovery spaces.

In addition, a state-of-the-art audiology booth, ophthalmology laser room, and a new OPD-specific plaster room will enable the hospital to undertake more procedures, whilst ensuring staff can provide the best hospital services for the community now and into the future.

Some of the outpatient specialities delivering services in the new OPD facility include gynaecology, orthopaedic, ophthalmology, physiological substitution, plastics, podiatry, breast care, ENT, audiology, respiratory, rheumatology, vascular, renal, neurology.

Gastroenterology services will also return on site, with plans to undertake urology outpatient procedures in the future.

Immunisations for both pregnant women and children will also commence in the near future, with the new unit having a designated medication room and immunisation fridge installed.

Building works will continue as further progress is made on the development of a new Palliative Care Unit and Short Stay Medical Unit, due for completion in January 2022.
