Residents of Horsham Rural City are encouraged to keep an eye on their mailboxes ahead of the 2026 Census, with Census Night falling on Tuesday 11 August. The Census provides essential data for planning services, infrastructure and investment across our region.
Held every five years by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the Census provides the most comprehensive snapshot of Australia’s population and communities. It is the only national data collection that captures information about every community, including regional centres and smaller townships across Horsham Rural City.
For Horsham Rural City Council, Census data is a critical tool used to understand the community’s changing needs and support evidence-based decision-making.
Local demographic profiles, social atlases and strategic planning resources are all informed by Census information, helping Council plan for future growth and ensure services are delivered where they are needed most.
Mayor Cr Brian Klowss said every Census response contributes to a clearer picture of Horsham’s future.
“The Census is much more than a headcount. It helps us understand who lives in our municipality, how our community is changing and what services and infrastructure will be needed in the years ahead.
“Whether it’s planning community facilities, advocating for healthcare services, improving transport networks or supporting housing and economic development, Census data provides the evidence that helps inform those decisions.”
Current demographic data shows Horsham Rural City is home to approximately 20,250 residents, with a median age of 41 years and a strong workforce participation rate. The municipality also has a higher proportion of lone-person households and trade-qualified workers compared with many other areas of Victoria. These insights help guide planning and investment decisions across a range of Council services.
The ABS notes that Census data is used by all levels of government, businesses, community organisations and service providers to plan schools, healthcare, transport, infrastructure and local programs. Accurate Census information helps ensure funding and resources are directed to where they are most needed.
Council is encouraging all residents to complete their Census as soon as possible on Census Night.
“By taking a few minutes to complete the Census, residents are helping shape the future of Horsham and our surrounding communities,” Cr Klowss said.
“Every household counts, every response matters, and every person helps build a stronger picture of our community.”
