Works to improve a number of accessible car parking spaces in Darwin’s city centre are commencing this week.
A review of all 27 city centre, on-street accessible car parking spaces was undertaken last year and included consultation with accessible car parking users, nearby businesses and Council’s Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee.
The review found that 18 car parking spaces required improvements or relocation to more suitable nearby locations.
Acting Lord Mayor Paul Arnold said it is fantastic to see the great feedback received during the review being put into action.
“It is extremely important that our accessible car parking spaces are fit-for-purpose and these improvements will provide users with increased safety and amenity, particularly for people who use a wheelchair.
“Nine existing accessible car parking bays will receive new kerb ramps, signs and line marking, and the remaining nine accessible parking bays will be relocated to more suitable, nearby locations,” said the Acting Lord Mayor.
Construction work is expected to be completed by the end of May 2021, weather permitting.
