The Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre will be completely redeveloped with two new pools, high platform slides and water play areas.
This week the State Government announced it would provide $5.6 million towards the upgrade with The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters providing matching funding.
The total cost of the redevelopment is expected to be about $20 million.
Mayor Robert Bria said he was “absolutely delighted” that the redevelopment was one step closer.
“On behalf of the community, I want to thank the State Government for this funding. The Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre is much-loved but desperately in need of renovation,” Mayor Bria said.
“This funding will make a huge difference in revitalising the Centre – making it even more popular – especially for thrill-seekers who will enjoy the high platform waterslides.
“The inclusion of disability access ramps will facilitate the increased use of the existing facilities as well as support greater independence for all patrons.”
Mayor Bria said the redevelopment would also boost the local economy by creating jobs and a direct spend on construction.
The redevelopment was outlined in the Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre Strategy which was endorsed by Council in 2017.
“The Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre is one of the last metropolitan swimming centres to undergo a major redevelopment so this funding injection is very much welcomed,” he said.
Work is expected to start in early 2022.
