Pedestrian-operated crossing underway at High Street, Thomastown

This week we started work to install a pedestrian-operated crossing on High Street Thomastown, between Central Avenue and Pleasant Road. The pedestrian signals are expected to take approximately four weeks to install, weather permitting.

The new crossing will provide a safer access point to and from the east side of High Street (opposite the IGA), where an apartment complex is currently being built.

These works are part of a project to revitalise the streetscape at Thomastown Shopping Centre. We recently completed stage 1 of this project and added a public toilet block at Central Avenue behind the IGA. Stage 1 works included a new public forecourt at the entrance to Thomastown Primary School with bench seats, lights and fresh landscaping.

Stage 2 of the streetscape improvement works, between Highlands Road and Pleasant Road, is due to commence early 2021 and will include:

  • New pedestrian crossings over Pleasant Road, Central Avenue and Highlands Road
  • Replacement of paving and drainage along High Street
  • Landscaping and street furniture (bike racks, bins) and more outdoor dining areas
  • A public space at the war memorial site opposite Thomastown Primary School with seats, shelter, lights and street furniture.
