People’s Choice Award feather in AAT hat

The Royal Australian Mint is celebrating its success at the 2023 Canberra Region Tourism Awards. The Mint was named as the ACT’s best Cultural Tourism destination and took home the coveted People’s Choice Award for Favourite Attraction at the annual event in Canberra last Friday evening.

Royal Australian Mint CEO, Leigh Gordon, said winning these awards honours the dedicated staff who have shown commitment to telling the Australian story through coins.

“The awards exemplify the Mint as a thriving tourism destination that fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of authentic culture, history and heritage.

“And while it’s encouraging to be recognised by our peers for the Best Cultural Tourism Destination, the true feather in our hat is the People’s Choice award.

“With more than 360,000 people coming to see what we have to offer each and every year, the People’s Choice award is a testament to the enthusiasm and professionalism of our education and gallery team and the programs they deliver,” Mr Gordon said.

The Mint’s education and gallery team is preparing a fun-filled and exciting program to run over the summer school holidays. At the end of January, the Deakin gallery will close for a much-anticipated refurbishment.

“The team has developed a major exhibition as well as extensive public programs on Australia’s coinage history for 2024, which will be delivered from our temporary location while our gallery has its much-needed facelift.

“The details of our pop-up exhibition space have almost been finalised. I cannot wait to tell you more about it in the coming weeks,” Mr Gordon said.

Visitors to the Mint can experience Australia’s coin history and production. With free exhibitions and tours offered daily, and the chance to walk above the factory floor, the Mint is a must-see when in Canberra.
