Perth, 08/03/2024 – Today, at International Women’s Day, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Perth is set to use its powerful platform of Friday prayers, the most significant prayer of the week where everyone makes a special effort to congregate, to shine a spotlight on the elevated status of women in Islam.
Imam Syed Wadod Janud, an Australian Imam and spokesperson of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Perth, will deliver a sermon focused on the intrinsic rights of women in Islam. In his words, he expresses, “Islam, at its core, establishes a profound spiritual equality between men and women. When we delve into the depth of Islamic teachings, one becomes envious of the comprehensive and respectful approach it takes towards women establishing their status through various teachings and narrations in so many roles whether that be as a mother, as a wife, as a sister, and as a daughter.”
Adding to this perspective, Ms. Lubna Bhugeloo, an occupational therapist and outreach coordinator for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Auxiliary in Perth, shares her thoughts on how she has always felt empowered as a Muslim woman growing up in Western Australia. She said: “Growing up as a Muslim woman in Australia, I feel fortunate to have the principles of Islam there to guide my worldview. As I grew up and learned more and more about history, I was left awestruck every single time that Islam established the rights of women 1400 years ago with a simple stroke of the pen, rights that women in modern civilizations had to fight for decades until the very recent past. It is truly a pity that the sparkling history of Islam is less known to many in Australia.”
