The future of the Pine Rivers Uniting Church in Kallangur is no longer in doubt, after the Crisafulli Government intervened and amended plans for a new special school to be built on the same site.
The church was facing an uncertain future due to a potential compulsory acquisition, as the site at 30 Narangba Road was endorsed under the former Labor Government in September 2024.
Under Labor, the church would have been bulldozed to make way for the special school, to the outrage of the local community.
Delivering a much-needed win for the Kallangur community, the Crisafulli Government has saved the church, while also delivering the special school. The Crisafulli Government is building Queensland’s future with the largest special school build in Queensland’s history, with nine new special schools included in the record $23.1 billion education budget. The new special school for Moreton Bay South will provide enrolment relief to Pine Rivers Special School and increase schooling capacity in the area. Minister for Education and the Arts John-Paul Langbroek said the new Moreton Bay South special school and the Pine Rivers Uniting Church will co-exist on the same site. “This is a magnificent outcome for the Pine Rivers community,” Minister Langbroek said. “The Crisafulli Government has worked collaboratively with the Uniting Church, we listened to the local community, and we will continue to work together in the years ahead.
“The church and the new special school will share the site and form a stronger community bond.
“During their decade of decline, the former Labor Government didn’t have a plan for Queensland’s future and just one month before the 2024 election they signed off on the site without acknowledging the potential consequences for the Pine Rivers Uniting Church. “Today’s announcement is a win for the local community. “The Crisafulli Government is delivering a fresh start and our new special schools are specifically designed to meet the needs of students, giving them the best start in life and empowering them to reach their full potential. “Queensland’s biggest special school build gives parents choice, so they can decide the best schooling option for their child.”
