Nillumbik Shire Council is planning for the future of Diamond Creek and the long-term delivery of new and improved community infrastructure in the township.
The first step of this process has been the development of a draft Community Infrastructure Strategic Plan, which is now on exhibition for community feedback at Participate Nillumbik.
The draft plan identifies the community infrastructure required to meet the needs of a projected Diamond Creek population of 15,000 in 2036 as well as the wider Nillumbik community the township serves.
The proposed infrastructure includes:
- A new community hub with library, Neighbourhood House/Living & Learning, and creative arts spaces at the current Diamond Creek Community Centre site.
- New aquatic, health and fitness centre with outdoor and indoor pools, swimming club rooms, gym, highball courts and a redeveloped sports pavilion for Coventry Oval.
- Coniston Street Family Centre extension with a new Maternal and Child Health Centre.
As part of the draft plan, two options for a Youth Hub are being considered:
- A youth hub integrated into the community hub, or
- A stand-alone youth hub at the current Senior Citizens Centre site.
Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre said community feedback was being sought on the draft plan, particularly the two options for the youth hub.
“This is an important first step in providing long-term strategic direction for community infrastructure in Diamond Creek. It will be followed by a more detailed master plan, subject to Council budget, and government funding will be needed to support the delivery of the projects,” she said.
“I’m passionate about improving services for our youth in the Shire and providing a dedicated hub is an important part of that. We’re keen to hear if people prefer the integrated or stand-along youth hub options shown in the draft plan.”
Ellis Ward Councillor Peter Perkins said the draft plan was great news for Diamond Creek.
“I’ve long advocated for improved services and facilities for our township, the second-largest in Nillumbik. These facilities must include a much-needed library, additional basketball/netball courts, purpose-built gym and improved aquatic facilities including swimming clubrooms,” Cr Perkins said.
“Importantly, the plan proposes to retain an outdoor pool, which is a huge attraction in Diamond Creek, and also includes new indoor warm water pools for year-round therapy use and learn-to-swim classes.
“I encourage our community to examine the plans and share your feedback so together we can make Diamond Creek an even better place to live.”
Feedback on the draft plan opens today, Monday 11 July, at Participate Nillumbik. Complete a short survey on the website or make a written submission by 11.59pm Sunday 7 August.
Council officers will also be meeting with key stakeholders and user groups during the consultation period.
