Planning for future: Moama Indoor Sports Complex

Murray River Council

The concept of a new Moama Sports and Entertainment Centre has been earmarked for inclusion in the Moama Recreation Reserve Masterplan to support future growth and planning.

Murray River Council received a feasibility report on the proposed centre at its council meeting this week, following extensive market research, a site review and stakeholder consultation undertaken by Otium Planning Group.

The report details the investigations and plans surrounding the construction of a multi-purpose indoor sports and function centre in Moama.

The proposed facility is envisaged to provide sport, recreation, event, and entertainment facilities to support local groups and the wider region.

Mayor Chris Bilkey said the concept is all about planning for the future.

“Whilst we won’t see an indoor centre immediately built, having a robust feasibly study and costings are crucial steps to getting such a big project off the ground.”

“The recreation reserve is the heart of community participation and sport in Moama so the proposed new facility would further cement the area as a first-class sporting precinct that could attract major local, regional and national events.”

“We have a growing population in Moama and Echuca along with an increased sports and events demand, so now is the time to start planning.”

Whilst the feasibility study has been completed and funded, the estimated total project cost for the centre is $18.4 million.

“Council will need to receive further figures around projected future costs and deprecation before we move onto any next stages, which would be to obtain funding to progress to a detailed design phase driven by extensive community consultation,” Cr Bilkey said.
