Play Your Part: St Kilda foreshore alcohol ban now in play

City of Port Phillip
An alcohol ban along the St Kilda foreshore is now in force until 31 March as part of Port Phillip Council’s annual summer management campaign.

The St Kilda foreshore alcohol ban, which started today, covers beaches, foreshore reserves and parklands from Langridge Street to Thackeray Street and includes opened and unopened containers of alcohol.

Alcohol in non-glass containers can still be enjoyed responsibly outside the St Kilda foreshore precinct, between midday and 8 pm except when City-wide alcohol bans apply across the key public holiday periods of New Year’s and Australia Day and during some major events.

Council’s Local Law officers are supporting Victoria Police efforts to enforce the various alcohol bans. They will also be regularly patrolling to enforce changes to dog off-leash restrictions and to reinforce the year-round glass ban.

Port Phillip Council CEO Chris Carroll called on residents and visitors to respect the alcohol bans and glass ban. Non-compliance with either ban carries a $198 fine. The glass ban applies to beaches, reserves and parklands spanning from Elwood to Port Melbourne.

“Our picturesque foreshore is one of the best places you can be this summer, including St Kilda – Victoria’s most iconic beach. As the weather warms and we welcome more visitors, we expect everyone to play their part to ensure our City is a safe and enjoyable place for all,” Mr Carroll said.

“Don’t risk a fine or having your alcohol confiscated when we have an incredible array of hospitality venues where you can enjoy a drink this summer.”

Dog restrictions also change during the summer period on Port Phillip beaches. Signs are in place to help dog owners easily identify on and off-leash areas.

Visitors are urged to make use of an extra 33,000 litres of bin capacity across foreshore, parks and retail precincts. This includes safely disposing of used vapes and e-cigarettes, which pose a fire risk due to an in-built battery and toxic liquids.

The Victorian Government has increased fines for the misuse of e-scooters. With increased e-scooter activity in Port Phillip over summer, riders are advised to follow the road rules and keep e-scooters off footpaths.

In cases of extreme heat, stay hydrated, be sun smart and limit your movement.
