Police appeal after attempted carjacking and armed robbery in Mortdale

Police are appealing to the public following an attempted carjacking and armed robbery in Sydney’s south earlier today.

About 10.55am (Friday 4 September 2020), officers attached to St George Police Area Command were called to George Street, Mortdale, after an unknown man – armed with a knife – threated a woman and her one-month-old baby before attempting to steal her car.

Police have been told the man grabbed the woman’s keys and entered her Madza station wagon before the woman screamed, alerting nearby witnesses.

In a separate incident, about 11am, the man attempted to break into a home on nearby Rosemount Avenue.

He then ran next door, where he had a physical altercation with a man before stealing a black BMW X3.

Officers attached to St George and the Dog Unit established a crime scene and commenced inquires.

The whereabouts of the black BMW X3, with registration DMK 66E, remains unknown.

Police would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

The man believed to be aged in his 20s or 30s, around 180cm to 190cm tall, of medium build. He was seen wearing a blue baseball cap, an orange high viability vest, grey jumper, dark tracksuit pants, blue/grey shoes and a dark coloured fabric facemask.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
