Police arrest man after crash at Ovingham, South Australia

A teenager has been arrested after allegedly stealing a bike and crashing a car at Ovingham this afternoon.

About 1.20pm on Tuesday 22 September security members at a university on North Terrace saw a man allegedly steal a big from a bike rack at the university and place it in the rear of a white Commodore station wagon waiting nearby on North Terrace.

Security at the university followed the man on foot and then police tracked the car using CCTV. The suspect was spotted by patrols travelling north on O’Connell Street. Police followed the station wagon for a short distance before it took off at speed and police lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later the car collided with a black Hyundai sedan at the intersection of Park Terrace and Torrens Road causing the sedan to land on its side. The driver and sole occupant of the sedan, a 33-year-old man from Magill, was taken by SAAS to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the station wagon continued on Torrens Road where he crashed the car. The man and his female passenger were seen running from the vehicle heading down Drayton Street. A short foot pursuit took place and the man was arrested a short distance away. The woman has been questioned over the incident and has not been charged with any offences.

A 19-year-old from Smithfield was charged with theft, driving disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle, disobeying red light, aggravated driving without due car, leaving the scene of a crash and hinder police. It is expected he will not be granted bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday 23 September.
