Police arrest man after dumping stolen car in Mitcham

A man found in possession of cannabis and a number of allegedly stolen credit cards has been arrested by a police dog and their handler after he ran off from a dumped car in Mitcham overnight.

Police dog Viper tracked the man down in parkland near Schwerkolt Cottage on Deep Creek Road about 11.40pm.

The man was seen running into the parkland, and along Mullum Mullum Creek, after he and another man dumped an allegedly stolen car nearby.

The 20-year-old was found to be in possession of a quantity of cannabis and an alleged handful of stolen bank and id cards.

Local police searched for the remaining offender, but he was unable to be located.

Police believe the dumped car, which had one of the front wheels worn down to the rim, was involved in an incident in Whitehorse Road Mitcham earlier in the night where its driver failed to pull over and sped off from police.

The Northcote man is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the outstanding offender is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
