Police arrest man after grave sites disturbed at Footscray cemetery

Detectives from Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit have arrested a man following an extensive investigation into the disturbance of two grave sites in Footscray in late January.

It is alleged partial human remains were stolen from mausoleums in two separate incidents at the Geelong Road cemetery between Thursday 27 January and Tuesday 1 February.

A 40-year-old Spotswood man has been arrested today and is currently in custody assisting with enquiries. It is expected the man will be charged with interfering with the corpse of a human being and criminal damage.

Maribyrnong CIU executed a warrant in Mary Street today, where they allegedly recovered what is believed to be the stolen partial human remains.

Local detectives have been working tirelessly and with extreme sensitivity to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident.

The investigation will continue and remains ongoing.
