Police arrest two after jewellery theft in CBD, South Australia

Detectives from Eastern District Criminal Investigation Branch have arrested a man and woman in relation to the theft of jewellery from a city store yesterday afternoon.

Just before 5.30pm on Wednesday 29 January, police responded to a report of theft of jewellery from a shop in Rundle Mall. The jewellery included a necklace and bracelet, with a retail value of more than $10,000.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect man running from the jewellery store and into a waiting car parked on Stephens Place. Police checked the CCTV in the mall revealing the getaway vehicle was in fact a rental car bearing plates that had been stolen from Russell Terrace at Edwardstown earlier in the day.

Further investigations led police to the Adelaide Airport where they located the man and his accomplice at the domestic check-in.

A 42-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman both from Victoria were arrested and charged with aggravated theft. They were refused bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today (Thursday 30 January).

The stolen jewellery was recovered and the rental car was seized for examination by crime scene investigators.

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
