Police charge man after assault on mounted branch officer

Police have charged a man after a Mounted Branch police officer was allegedly assaulted during a protest in Melbourne’s CBD last Saturday.

North West Metro Regional Crime Squad detectives have today charged a 40-year-old Narre Warren South man with nine offences including assault police officer, intentionally cause injury, throw missile to injure and fail to comply with Chief Health Officer directions.

The charges relate to an alleged incident that occurred when a group of officers were patrolling on horse-back along Swanston Street between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane about 12.15pm, 24 July.

It will be alleged the man picked up a traffic bollard and threw it in the direction of the officers.

The bollard struck a female senior constable who was facing the other direction and unable to protect herself.

The man left the scene and the officer was treated for injuries to her neck and head.

These injuries require ongoing medical treatment.

The man will face Melbourne Magistrates Court tonight.
