Police charge man after posing as police officer and defrauding man in Redfern

Detectives have charged a man after he allegedly impersonated a police officer before defrauding a man in south Sydney.

In June 2020, a man allegedly impersonated a police officer and offered to assist a 36-year-old man with his Redfern business.

Police will allege the man requested money for the assistance, with the 36-year-old paying him a large sum during a two-week period.

It is further alleged the man then pretended to have cancer and requested further money for treatment.

Police were notified and detectives from South Sydney Police Area Command commenced an investigation.

Following those inquiries, detectives arrested a 51-year-old man at a home in Yagoona about 9.30am yesterday (Saturday 25 July 2020).

He was taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was charged with six counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage and impersonate police officer.

The man was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court today (Sunday 26 July 2020).
