Police charge man over assault of police officer at hospital in Darlinghurst

A man will face court today after being charged over the alleged assault of a police officer at an inner-city hospital yesterday.

About 1pm (Sunday 22 March 2020), officers from Sydney City Police Area Command were at St Vincent’s Hospital for an unrelated matter, when they went to the assistance of nursing staff with a patient.

As the male senior constable and nurse approached the 31-year-old man and attempted to speak with him, the officer was allegedly punched a number of times in the face.

The officer fell to the ground and momentarily lost consciousness.

Police will allege in court that the man continued to punch the officer and resisted as further police and hospital staff intervened.

The man was eventually subdued and sedated by medical staff.

The officer was treated for head and facial injuries but has since been released from hospital. He is expected to be unfit for duty for a number of days.

The 31-year-old man was arrested after he was released from hospital and taken to Day Street Police Station, where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm and resist officer in execution of duty.

He was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court later today (Monday 23 March 2020).
