Police charge man over sexual abuse of young girl in Riverina

A man will face court today charged over the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl in the state’s Riverina region at the weekend.

About 6.30pm on Sunday (24 May 2020), officers from Riverina Police District were contacted following reports a 10-year-old girl had been sexually abused by a man known to her at a park at Cootamundra.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers, while detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, a 40-year-old man was arrested at a home at Cootamundra, about 3.15pm yesterday (Monday 25 May 2020), and taken to Cootamundra Police Station.

The man was charged with detain person with intent to commit serious indictable offence (kidnapping), aggravated sexual act, incite child to sexually touch and, unlawful entry on inclosed lands.

Police will allege in court that the man, who is known to the girl’s family, forced his way into a toilet cubicle with the girl at the park, and detained her before allegedly committing a sexual act towards her and inciting her to touch him.

He has been refused bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Tuesday 26 May 2020).
