Police charge man with fraud and drug offences in Gymea

Police have charged a man with fraud and drug offences following investigations into the use of fraudulent notes in the Sutherland Shire and Lake Illawarra region.

About 8.55pm on Wednesday 22 April 2020, a man allegedly used a counterfeit $100 note to purchase $13 worth of alcohol at a business in Gymea and received change.

The fake note was reported to officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command who commenced an investigation into fraudulent notes used at a variety of businesses.

Inquiries linked the notes with similar alleged crimes in the Lake Illawarra region from February to April.

Following inquiries officers today (Friday 1 May 2020), conducted a search warrant at a home on the Kingsway, Gymea, and seized 13 counterfeit $100 notes, a large number of receipts, property suspected of being the proceeds of crime, cash, and five grams of methylamphetamine.

A 42-year-old man was arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station, where he was charged with 12 counts of utter counterfeit money knowing it to be counterfeit, 10 counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception, possess counterfeit money, deal with proceeds of crime and, supply prohibited drug and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court tomorrow (Saturday 2 May 2020).
