Police charge man with speeding offences at Wollongong

A driver has been charged after allegedly travelling almost 90km/hr over the speed limit south of Wollongong last week.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol were conducting stationary speed enforcement on the Princes Motorway at Berkeley, about 11.30pm on Friday (15 December 2023), when a sedan was allegedly detected travelling southbound at approximately 189km/h in a sign-posted 100km/h zone.

The 30-year-old driver was stopped and subjected to a roadside breath and drug test, which allegedly returned a positive reading for both.

The man was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he allegedly failed to provide an adequate sample.

The man, from Wollongong, has been charged with exceeding the speed limit by over 45km/h, refuse or fail to provide oral fluid sample, and refuse or fail to submit to breath analysis.

The man is due to appear before Kiama Local Court on Monday 5 February 2024.

The man’s licence has been suspended.
