Police charge two over Villawood Immigration Detention Centre assault

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has charged two men for an alleged assault at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre on Wednesday, 29 January.

It will be alleged that a 42-year-old man was sleeping in his room when two other men entered and assaulted him, punching and kicking him in the face and head.

Staff at the centre responded to the incident and the 42-year-old man was transported to Liverpool Hospital for treatment of facial injuries.

The AFP commenced an investigation and as a result two foreign nationals have been charged.

The two men, aged 42 and 28, have each been charged with one count of reckless grievous bodily harm, contrary to s.35(2) of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW).

They were refused bail and are due to appear in Bankstown Local Court today, 31 January.

The maximum sentence for this offence is 10 years imprisonment.
