Police investigate armed robbery at Newport

Police are investigating the armed robbery of an elderly man in Newport this afternoon.

At 4.40pm a 75-year-old man disturbed someone who was searching through his home on Defender Street.

The offender, who was armed with a pickaxe then threatened the man and demanded he hand over his car keys.

When he refused, the elderly man was punched in the face before having his Kia stolen which was then used in a petrol drive off in Gympie approximately 2hrs later.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have seen the 2016 silver Kia Carnival being driven at speed between Redcliffe and Gympie to contact them.

It is believed the rear of the vehicle may have sustained substantial damage to the rear,

Additionally, anyone with dashcam footage of the area at the time is asked to contact police.
