Police investigate sexual assault on Bundoora bound tram

Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a sexual assault that occurred on a route 86-tram last month.

Investigators have been told a 20-year-old Mill Park woman was on a tram heading from Plenty Road Preston to Bundoora about 4pm on Thursday 9 April.

An unknown man boarded the tram at Stop number 56 in Plenty Road, Reservoir.

He engaged in a conversation with the victim before he exposed his genitals and began to masturbate.

The victim shouted at the male and approached the tram driver before the male left the tram at Plenty Road, Bundoora.

Investigators have released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is perceived to be Caucasian, with dark brown hair and a beard, medium build, approximately 175cm tall and aged 20-25 years old.

He was wearing a dark long sleeve top, pink shorts, a light-coloured baseball cap and black and white shoes.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who might have been on the tram, or who recognises the man, to come forward and speak with them.

Senior Constable Andrew Levey from Transit Crime Investigation Unit said, “public safety is a top priority for Victoria Police and no one deserves to feel unsafe or uncomfortable when travelling on public transport.”

“This kind of behaviour is unacceptable, and we will do all we can to hold the correct person accountable,
