Police lay armed robbery charges at Gold Coast

Police have charged a 26-year-old man following an armed robbery on the Gold Coast yesterday.

It will be alleged shortly before 5.30pm, the man attended a property along Orana Parade in Southport with what appeared to be a handgun, where he stole a Ford Ranger utility.

The utility was monitored through a tracking device in the vehicle as it travelled south to Currumbin Valley.

PolAir monitored the vehicle as it travelled to a carpark along KP McGrath Drive in Elanora and pulled up next to a motorbike shortly before 7.30pm.

It will be further alleged the man threatened the motorbike rider with the weapon and took the motorbike and travelled a short distance.

Upon arrival of police, the motorbike lost control and crashed and the man ran from the scene through a shopping centre carpark.

A police dog squad unit located the man hiding in private property nearby. He was taken into custody around 9.30pm.

The 26-year-old Coolangatta man has been charged with one count each of armed robbery, enter dwelling with intent whilst armed and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. He will appear at the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow, October 16.

Investigations are continuing.
