Police lay assault charge at Surfers Paradise

Queensland Police have charged a 21-year-old man after a man was allegedly assaulted at Surfers Paradise overnight.

It will be alleged around 2:50am, near a light rail station on Cavill Avenue, a 34-year-old man entered a verbal altercation with a group of people, including the 21-year-old Upper Coomera man.

During this altercation, its alleged the 21-year-old man moved behind the 34-year-old and physically assaulted him, forcing him to fall to the ground.

Patrolling officers have spotted and disrupted the altercation, before the 21-year-old man fled on foot.

Officers tracked the man for a short period of time, before he was taken into custody nearby.

The 34-year-old man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 21-year-old Upper Coomera man has been charged with one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm, obstruct police.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on May 8.

Two boys, aged 15 and 16, are currently assisting police with further enquires.

Investigations are ongoing.
