Police lay charges after mail theft

Public Order Response Team (PORT) members have charged a man following a series of mail thefts in East Melbourne today.

Police received numerous calls to Triple Zero (000) reporting a man acting suspiciously near Wellington Parade around 11am.

PORT officers located the man, who was allegedly found to be in possession of multiple envelopes and packages which were not in his name.

The 41-year-old man from Macleod will face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this evening, charged with four counts of theft, handle stolen goods, deal property suspected proceeds of crime, dishonestly tamper with mail receptacle, loiter with intent to commit indictable offence and commit indictable offence whilst on bail.

He had also been issued with a penalty notice for breaching the Chief Health Officer’s directions.
