Police lay charges – Aggravated robbery in Darwin

Strike Force Trident officers have charged a 13-year-old male for aggravated robbery and driving offences.

The 33-year-old male victim was walking to his vehicle on Searcy Street around 9:20pm on Wednesday, 18 December. He was approached by three males who asked him for a drink of water. The victim complied and gave them his water bottle prior to being assaulted by the group.

The 13-year-old then took the victim’s car keys, started the vehicle, and drove 30 metres across Searcy Street where he mounted the gutter and struck a Power and Water pole, causing damage to a nearby grid and transformer.

Transit Security Officers witnessed the event and apprehended the 13-year-old male. The youth was arrested by police, conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for minor injuries sustained in the crash, and later conveyed to Palmerston Watch House. The victim also attended Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

The 13-year-old was charged with:

  • Aggravated robbery
  • Aggravated unlawful use of motor vehicle
  • Driving while unlicensed
  • Damage to property
