Police lay charges over traffic offences in Darwin 17 August

Northern Territory Police have charged a 29-year-old male and will issue summons to a 17-year-old male for traffic offending over the weekend.

Around 12:00pm on Sunday 16 August 2020, members from Darwin Traffic Operations were conducting static speed detection in the vicinity of Hidden Valley when they observed a motorcyclist travelling at 202km/h in a 100km/h zone. Police conducted a traffic apprehension on the 29-year-old rider.

He has been issued with a notice to appear in court for:

  • drive at speed dangerous to the public
  • drive at dangerous speed
  • exceed speed limit (over 45km/h).

He is due to appear at Darwin Local Court on Tuesday 8 September 2020.

In a separate incident on Sunday, a 17-year-old male P-plate driver was detected by members of Darwin Traffic Operations travelling in a vehicle at 153 km/h in a 100km/h zone on Tiger Brennan Drive near Amy Johnson Drive.

He will appear in court at a later date for:

  • P plater exceed licence conditions of over 100km/h
  • drive at speed dangerous to the public
  • drive at dangerous speed
  • exceed speed limit (over 45km/h).

Senior Sergeant Paul Faustmann from the Road Policing Division said, “These two persons have placed their lives and the lives of other road users at serious risk. Unfortunately over the weekend two persons lost their lives on Territory roads. These two offenders are fortunate that they didn’t become a further fatality statistic”.
