Police responding to fatal traffic crash at Helensvale 26 November

A man and a woman have died away following a single vehicle traffic crash involving an alleged stolen motorbike at Helensvale.

Preliminary investigations indicate the motorbike, allegedly stolen overnight on October 11 from Biggera Waters, was observed travelling at high speed along Discovery Drive at Helensvale early this morning.

Police activated their vehicle’s warning lights and attempted to intercept the motorbike, however it allegedly fled the scene.

The motorcycle was subsequently located a short time later around 1.35am crashed on Helensvale Road near Siganto Drive.

The rider and pillion passenger, a 36-year-old Oxenford man and a 35-year-old Upper Coomera woman, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Forensic Crash Unit and Ethical Standards Command are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

A 50-year-old male witness to the crash is assisting with inquiries. The Elanora man has since been charged with high range drink driving (BAC 0.217%) driving unlicensed and driving without prescribed interlock device and was bailed to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on December 9.

The Ethical Standards Command has been advised.
