Police search for motorist swept into river

Search and Rescue Squad divers will search for the driver of a submerged vehicle after it was swept away by flood waters in Thomson yesterday.

Police have been told the missing driver and another man were in two vehicles when the first man, driving a Nissan Patrol, attempted to cross a river crossing near Sullivan Track about 1.30pm.

It appears the driver, who is aged in his 60s, got into difficulty as he tried to cross the swollen river when his car dropped in what appeared a deep section of the crossing.

Sadly, the 4WD was swept away and inundated with water.

The second driver unsuccessfully tried to help and rescue his friend before raising the alarm.

A crime scene guard has been placed in the vicinity of the incident until police divers and local police reattend the scene in the morning.
