Police seek witnesses – Attempted child abduction at Tennant Creek

Northern Territory Police are calling for witnesses in relation to an attempted child abduction that occurred in Tennant Creek earlier today.

On the evening of Saturday 18 July 2020, a 19-year-old male was socialising at a residence on Scheelite Crescent.

About 12:30am on Sunday 19 July 2020, the male allegedly removed a sleeping 9-year-old girl from the location without the knowledge of her family. The child woke outside of a nearby unit complex, screamed at the male and ran home. Family immediately notified police.

Police are investigating the incident and are urging parents, carers and children to remember the four R’s:

  • Recognise the danger
  • Refuse any offer
  • Run away
  • Report it to the first person they feel safe with.

The girl was not physically hurt and is safe with her family. Support services have been arranged.

Police are calling for witnesses, anyone with CCTV footage in the vicinity of Scheelite Crescent or information about the incident to notify police on 131 444 or anonymously via CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000. Please quote reference 9366963.
