Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after a three-vehicle collision in Frankston on Friday, 13 May.
Emergency services were called to the Frankston Freeway, northbound, near Cranbourne Road to reports of the collision involving a truck and two cars about 11am.
Investigators have been told traffic had slowed after a dog was seen running on the road when the truck collided into the rear of a Ford Territory which in turn collided into a Ford Focus.
The driver of the Territory, an 82-year-old Seaford man, was taken to hospital with life-threatening-injuries.
The driver of Focus was uninjured.
The driver of the truck, a 42-year-old St Albans man, was uninjured and is assisting police with their enquiries.
The dog ran from the scene and has not been located.
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
