Police seek witnesses to Werribee River death

Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance following the non-suspicious death of a man in Werribee earlier this week.

Police and emergency services were called to the Werribee River following reports a man had gone into the water near Chirnside Park and failed to return about 5.40pm on Tuesday 14 July.

Search and Rescue and Water Police attended the scene but were unable to locate the man.

Search and Rescue crews returned to the scene the following day and located the 30-year-old man’s body about 10am.

Although the death is not being treated as suspicious, detectives are trying to piece together the man’s movements in the lead up to the incident.

Investigators have released images of the man’s clothing in the hope that someone may have seen the man and may be able to provide information.

The clothing was located on the bank of the river near Cottrell Street, about 500m from where the man went into the water.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the man near the Werribee River, or within Wyndham Park from about 2.30pm onwards on 14 July to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
