Police tackle crime on public transport – Operation Aramid

Police have charged over 35 people with drug, property and weapon offences following a three-day operation across the Sydney region.

Operation Aramid was conducted between Thursday 15 and Saturday 17 February 2024, with the goal to tackle anti-social behaviour across Sydney’s public transport network.

Officers attached to the North Central Police Transport Command charged 35 people with 39 offences including possess prohibited drug, supply prohibited drug, custody of a knife, goods in custody, possess prohibited weapon and breach of bail.

Incidents of note include:

  • About 7.40pm on Friday (16 February 2024), police approached a man at the light rail stop on Chalmers Street, Surry Hills. A search of the man located two cans of capsicum spray, a knife and drugs. The 48-year-old man was arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with three counts of use prohibited weapon contrary to prohibition order and possess prohibited drug. He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Saturday 17 February 2024, where he was given conditional bail to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday 27 February 2024
  • About 6pm on Saturday (17 February 2024), police stopped a man at Kings Cross Railway Station. Checks revealed the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant for an aggravated robbery. The 38-year-old man was arrested and taken to Kings Cross Police Station where he was charged with robbery in company. He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Sunday 18 February 2024, where he was formally refused bail to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 18 April 2024.
  • Just after 7.30pm on Saturday (17 February 2024), police stopped a BMW X3 rental car on Cunningham Street, Haymarket. A search of the vehicle located an amount of drugs, believed to be cocaine and cash. The 17-year -old was arrested and taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with recklessly deal with proceeds of crime, supply prohibited drug – greater than indictable & less than commercial quantity and disobey ‘no stopping’ sign. He was given conditional bail to appear before a children’s court on Wednesday 6 March 2024.
  • About 8.30pm on Saturday (17 February 2024), police were at the Chinatown light rail stop when two men were seen to be acting suspiciously. Police searched a 44-year-old man and located drugs – believed to be methylamphetamine. He was given a court attendance notice for possess prohibited drug. A search of the 47-year-old man located an amount of cash. He was arrested and taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with supply prohibited drug – greater than small and less than indictable quantity and recklessly deal with proceeds of crime. He was given conditional bail to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 6 March 2024.
