Police update: Marine search – Vernon Islands

Northern Territory Police have located an overdue vessel.

Late yesterday, Wednesday 18 March 2020, an Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA) Challenger Jet from Cairns, Queensland located the position of two men aged 24 and 26-years-old overdue from Wurrumiyanga. The men had failed to return from gathering food on Tuesday 17 March 2020 after their 5 metre dinghy’s engine failed.

A Northern Territory Water Police vessel recovered the two men and returned them to the Tiwi Islands.

The two men had water and full safety equipment on their dinghy.

Sergeant John Pini from Northern Territory Water Police said, “I would like to publicly thank AMSA for their assistance; the Challenger Jet used in this search certainly reduced search times and is a great resource for the NT to call upon.”
