Popular Jetstar Asia destination, Okinawa, becoming budding location for Singapore film-makers

This month, Jetstar Asia will celebrate three years of flying from Singapore to Okinawa, the Hawaii of Japan. Since the inaugural flight, the Singapore-based airline has welcomed more than 85,000 passengers on the route, and its popularity shows no sign of waning, as it’s not just tourists wanting to visit this beautiful destination.

Singapore film-makers are now choosing Okinawa as the stunning backdrop to their movie projects such as the recent BananaMana Film romance drama “Jimami Tofu”, which currently holds the title of the longest running film in Singapore cinemas.

Singapore’s largest content producer, Mediacorp, also has its eye on Okinawa as they become the latest entertainment house to film in Okinawa with a yet-to-be named Mandarin romance drama series expected to feature popular Singapore actors and to be released in 2020.

Executive Producer, Loh Woon Woon said that Jetstar Asia’s direct services between Singapore and Okinawa made travel to one of the most beautiful places in Japan more accessible.

“Popular destinations in Okinawa such as Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, the Ryukyu Glass Village and stunning beaches in Manza, Sesoko are not only must-sees for holiday-makers but are also the perfect production backdrops,” said Loh.

Jetstar Asia’s CEO, Bara Pasupathi, said it was wonderful to see Okinawa’s popularity continue to grow despite the recent developments.

“The news of the tragic loss of the main building of the historical Shuri Castle has deeply impacted the people of Okinawa and our deepest sympathies are with them.

“We are pleased to be the only LCC to fly between Singapore and Okinawa for the last two years and the introduction of our fifth service a week is our commitment to continue to promote the wonders of Okinawa,” Mr. Pasupathi said.

The fifth service departs Tuesday morning from 29 October 2019 at 2:00am and arrives into Okinawa at 8:00am.

Jetstar Asia currently operates up to 28 services a week to Japan including Okinawa and Osaka. Jetstar Japan currently operates up to nine daily services to Naha in Okinawa from Narita, Nagoya and Osaka in Japan.
