  • Premier Mark McGowan today volunteered at The Smith Family 2019 Christmas Appeal, to encourage Western Australians to dig deep and give to those who may be less fortunate than themselves this year.

    The Premier joined volunteers at The Smith Family’s packing centre today, at Claremont Showgrounds, to help pack toys and books for up to 2,700 Western Australian children this festive season.

    More than 400 volunteers have already packed more than 7,800 toys that will be delivered to disadvantaged families on Sunday, December 15.

    Up to 170 volunteer delivery drivers will pick up the Christmas gifts this Sunday and travel across the State to drop them off to families in need.

    This year, The Smith Family appeal is aiming to raise $4.26 million nationally to assist more than 10,000 children and young people throughout Australia through learning and mentoring programs.

    This Christmas you can help families in need by:

    • Making a donation for The Smith Family learning programs – such as reading programs, after-school Learning Clubs and mentoring;
    • Purchasing a toy or book through The Smith Family’s online shop;
    • Donating a new toy or book; and
    • Volunteering.

    As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

    “Christmas should be an exciting and special time of year – but unfortunately this isn’t always the case for some Western Australian families.

    “The Smith Family, and their volunteers, do a tremendous job each year collecting and distributing toys and books so every child has the opportunity for a merry Christmas.

    “I’m very proud to join volunteers today to support the 2019 Smith Family appeal and I thank everyone involved for the tireless work they do in the lead up to Christmas.”
