PRESS STATEMENT: Safe Discharge for Container Ship to Begin while Clean-Up Progresses

ANL

(Melbourne, Australia) ANL, operator of container vessel APL England which lost containers in heavy seas off the New South Wales coast on 24 May 2020, confirms that the vessel is now berthed safely at AAT (Australian Amalgamated Terminals) at the Port of Brisbane. Discharge of the vessel’s cargo will begin tomorrow morning, 29th May.

ANL continues to work closely with the relevant authorities to retrieve cargo which fell overboard and is cooperating fully with all investigations into the cause of the event.

None of the containers from the vessel contained dangerous cargo. However, ANL is committed to preserving the environment and, as previously announced, has appointed an expert in environmental clean-ups. The contractor has been removing surface debris on NSW shorelines since yesterday.

Multiple teams, working with authorities, have been conducting land and aerial surveys. Containers that have been reported on beaches and floating at sea will be removed as a matter of priority. Floating containers will be towed back to land where they will be removed.
