The Tasmanian Government is getting on with the job of planning and managing the transfer of surplus Defence land at Dowsing Point.
Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent, said this project will create up to 1000 new homes at the 31-hectare site.
“Our Government continues to work with the Federal Government to redevelop and transform Dowsing Point to provide more housing, open space and community infrastructure,” Minister Vincent said.
“Redevelopment of this site is an exciting and rare opportunity to deliver large-scale new housing within an inner-urban location.
“I look forward to the Federal Government working through its necessary processes to transfer the land to make this vision become a reality.
“Building Tasmania has established a project team to lead work on Dowsing Point, delivering a central point of contact and providing essential support, including ongoing engagement with the Federal Government and other key stakeholders.
“Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, our Government is supercharging infrastructure delivery to boost housing supply across Tasmania.
“The site is perfect for housing – close to jobs, transport and services.
“Social and affordable housing will be an important part of the mix to ensure we support a diverse community.”
The Federal Government’s process to transfer all personnel from Derwent Barracks is expected to take at least 12 months, while work on planning between the Australian and Tasmanian Government to deliver the future of the site continues.
