Property Council of australia calls for land tax relief

With the Tasmanian Government likely to announce a further support package in coming days, the Property Council is calling for land tax relief to be top of the list of measures.

Tasmanian Executive Director of the Property Council, Brian Wightman, said that land tax relief would help take the pressure of Tasmanians at this critical time.

“The Coronavirus is firstly a health issue but it’s also devastating for the economy. We need to seriously consider any steps that could help Tasmanians cope with this unprecedented pandemic,” Mr. Wightman said.

“Land tax is a major cost to a significant number of households, small businesses and employers. It’s vital that everything is on the table as the Tasmanian Government develops its support package.

“The Property Council is calling for the Government to act on land tax, even if it’s just a temporary tax holiday. We would also support the government introducing emergency legislation if necessary, to ensure landlords pass on any land tax reduction to tenants.”

Mr. Wightman said the Property Council stands ready to work with the Tasmanian Government and the entire community in these extraordinary times.
