The proposal would transform approximately 99 hectares of under-utilised land into a walkable neighbourhood with housing, open space, community facilities and employment opportunities.
Property Council Western Sydney Regional Director Ross Grove said the announcement was an important step in delivering the well-located housing Sydney desperately needs.
“The Property Council welcomes the exhibition of the Werrington Precinct rezoning proposal and congratulates the NSW Government, Western Sydney University and Stockland on progressing this significant opportunity for Western Sydney,” Mr Grove said.
“This proposal makes excellent use of well-located land close to transport, jobs, education and services, which is exactly the type of housing development needed to help address Sydney’s housing challenges.
“Importantly, this announcement builds on the excellent work already underway to unlock more homes across the Penrith Local Government Area, including the St Marys rezoning and future planning work around Kingswood.
“Penrith has consistently shown up as a welcoming place for investment and development. The City has established a strong vision for growth across the entire LGA and continues to work constructively with industry and government to deliver new homes, jobs and infrastructure for local communities,” Mr Grove said.
The proposed rezoning includes plans for around 1,500 homes, approximately 12,000 square metres of retail, commercial and community floor space, more than 18 hectares of public open space and over 1,000 ongoing local jobs.
Mr Grove said Western Sydney would play a critical role in meeting the state’s housing targets and that developments such as Werrington demonstrated how housing and employment growth could be planned together.
“The best housing outcomes are achieved when growth is aligned with infrastructure, jobs and community facilities. The Werrington proposal reflects that approach and has the potential to create a thriving new neighbourhood that benefits both existing and future residents.
“As Western Sydney continues to grow, projects like Werrington will help ensure more people can live closer to where they work, study and access essential services,” he said.
